Commando Cody
 | As a kid I remember watching Commando Cody on TV.
Cowboys were OK and Superman was interesting but this
ordinary-looking scientist guy with his rocket-pack could fly. As a
young budding inventor this appeared possible. This page has some
excellent writing and pictures on the first Rocketman.

Friends of Jesse Morrow Mountain
 | Jesse Morrow Mountain marks the western gateway
of the assent to Kings Canyon National Park. From Hwy 180, it is the
dominant foothill driving East towards the Sierras. Cemex, Inc. is proposing to operate a
hard rock aggregate mining operation along the southern side of
Jesse Morrow Mountain in eastern Fresno County. The problem is that
unlike other rock and gravel sites in the area this one will be a
highly visible for miles. It will be a 24 hour operation with weekly
blastings, intent on removing a large portion of the mountain. The
Friends site exists to inform others and help prevent the
project. It also contains several of my pictures of Jesse Morrow.

 | Buck Rock Lookout
 | A while back we visited Buck Rock Lookout. It is located just outside Kings
Canyon National Park in the Sequoia National Forest.
The perceived usefulness and status of fire lookouts has definitely changed
since I worked summers for USFS and watched a lightning storm from
one; But they are still wondrous high places in the forest sky. |

Hetch Hetchy
 | Somewhere in early college I found a book of
photographs of Hetch Hetchy. I had never heard of it. Also located in Yosemite Park, Hetch Hetchy was,
according to John Muir, as beautiful a valley as the famous Yosemite
Valley. But San Francisco wanted the water so a dam was constructed
in 1922 and the valley was lost, perhaps forever. Imagine Yosemite
Valley filled with water. This was actually proposed back then. This site has an
interesting collection of before and after pictures that will give
you the idea. |
